Please join us for a talk by Prof An Ansoms
How do researchers make ethical choices when evidence, funding pressures, and community realities collide? How can we create space for the complex emotions that research evokes? And how do we navigate an academic world where knowledge production is too often reduced to a "publish or perish" race? Drawing on her book and years of fieldwork on resilience, knowledge, and collaboration, An Ansoms will examine the ethical dilemmas that shape research in practice. Moving beyond abstract codes of conduct, she invites reflection on the everyday challenges of research: negotiating power imbalances, valuing and respecting local knowledge, handling data with care, and maintaining integrity amid institutional and personal pressures.About the speaker - An Ansoms is a Professor at UCLouvain, Belgium. Her research examines rural transformation in Central and Eastern Africa, with a particular focus on climate and resource conflicts. She adopts interdisciplinary, art-based, and action-oriented approaches to explore how people navigate change in challenging environments. In parallel, she specializes in research ethics, investigating the emotional and moral dilemmas that emerge in complex field contexts. She is the author of a personal memoir that weaves together her own experiences with broader reflections on passion, vulnerability, and integrity in research.
