Dr. Natasha Issa Shivji is a postdoctoral research associate in the African studies center and Political science department at Cambridge University, UK, and the Director of the Institute of Research in Intellectual Histories of Africa (IRIHA) in Dar es Salaam. She completed her PhD at New York University, History department on the histories of political descent in East Africa. Her MA work was completed at the Indian Ocean Studies Centre at McGill University, History department.

She has previously taught at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and University of Dodoma, Tanzania. She has taught and researched on Indian Ocean World History, State formation in East Africa and the Agrarian question in Africa.
