Africa figures prominently in the global trend towards the enfranchisement of its nationals abroad. However, very few studies have been devoted to this new “frontier” of citizenship in the African context. This presentation deals with the causes and impact of the electoral enfranchisement of African diasporas, the struggles and debates around long distance voting. How “global” are African elections? What role do diasporas play in home country elections? What analytical leverage can we gain from studying African elections from abroad? The presentation will answer these questions through the case of the vote of the Senegalese diaspora.
