Departments and Institutes
Ian's research focuses upon democratisation in sub-Saharan Africa. His doctoral work explored three aspects of contemporary politics in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana: why presidential succession crises cause some parties to split whilst leaving others unscathed; what parties wish to achieve and why these objectives are chosen; and why opposition voting is often acutely volatile. He is also interested in electoral politics as practised elsewhere in southern Africa, especially Zimbabwe, Zambia, Angola and Mozambique.
